What is a 24-word seed phrase?

Your seed phrase (also called a recovery phrase, mnemonic phrase, or secret phrase) is the master key to your Klever wallet. It controls access to all your cryptocurrency across all supported blockchains.

A seed phrase is a set of 24 words representing a large random number. This number creates a “seed” that generates your wallet’s private keys. Each blockchain address has its own private key, which authorizes transactions and proves ownership of your funds.

In Klever, your private keys are securely generated from and tied to your 24-word seed phrase. If anything happens to your device—whether your phone is lost, stolen, or damaged—the only way to recover your funds is with your seed phrase.

Klever Wallet generates 24-word seed phrases following the BIP39 standard, providing maximum security for your digital assets.

Why does Klever use a 24-word seed phrase?

Klever is committed to providing users with the highest level of security for their digital assets. The 24-word seed phrase offers:

  • Maximum cryptographic security: 24-word seed phrases provide 256-bit entropy, offering exceptional protection against brute force attacks

  • Long-term asset protection: Ideal for users storing significant value or planning to hold crypto for extended periods

  • Industry-leading security: Matches the security level of premium hardware wallets and institutional-grade solutions

  • Future-proof protection: 256-bit security is considered quantum-resistant for the foreseeable future

  • BIP39 compatibility: Full compatibility with other wallets that support the BIP39 standard

Klever previously offered 12-word seed phrases but transitioned to 24-word generation for all new wallets to provide users with enhanced security by default.

How is a 24-word seed phrase generated?

Your 24-word seed phrase starts with a large, randomly generated number created securely on your device. Here’s how it works:

  1. Random number generation: Klever generates a 256-bit random number (a series of 256 ones and zeros) using your device’s secure random number generator.

  2. Dividing into chunks: This 256-bit number is divided into chunks of 11 bits each. Each 11-bit chunk can represent a number between 0 and 2047 (exactly 2048 possible values).

  3. Word mapping: These numbers are matched with words from the standard BIP39 wordlist, which contains exactly 2048 English words. So each 11-bit chunk corresponds to one specific word.

  4. Creating your phrase: The result is your 24-word seed phrase, where each word represents a specific number.

  5. Checksum: The last few bits include a checksum to verify the integrity of your seed phrase when you restore it.

  6. Key derivation: This seed phrase is converted into a master seed, which then generates all your wallet’s private and public key pairs using industry-standard algorithms (BIP32, BIP39, and BIP44).

Each blockchain asset (like Bitcoin, Ethereum, or TRX) uses a different derivation path to create its keys, preventing overlap between different cryptocurrencies.

The entire process happens locally on your device. Klever never sees or stores your seed phrase on any server.

How secure is a 24-word seed phrase?

A BIP39 24-word seed phrase has 2048²⁴ possible combinations. That’s the same as 2²⁵⁶, or 2 to the power of 256.

This gives it 256 bits of security-the same level used by:

  • Advanced Encryption Standard (AES-256)

  • Top-secret government communications

  • Military-grade encryption systems

To put this in perspective:

  • There are more possible 24-word combinations than there are atoms in several universes

  • Even with every computer on Earth working together, it would take trillions of years to guess your seed phrase

  • This level of security is considered quantum-resistant for the foreseeable future

In short: A 24-word seed phrase is virtually unbreakable through brute force attacks.

Where is my 24-word seed phrase stored?

Your 24-word seed phrase is encrypted and stored only on your device where you install Klever Wallet. Here’s what this means:

You are the only person with access to your seed phrase and private keys. Klever does not store your seed phrase on any servers. Klever cannot recover your seed phrase if you lose it . No one can access your funds even if Klever’s servers were compromised (because we don’t have your keys)

As the crypto community says: “Not your keys, not your crypto.”

This design philosophy protects your wallet by ensuring you have complete control. However, it also means you are fully responsible for keeping your seed phrase safe. If you lose it and lose access to your device, your funds cannot be recovered by anyone.

How do I keep my seed phrase safe?

Your seed phrase is your responsibility. Follow these critical security practices:

Write it down on paper

Never store your seed phrase digitally. Digital files can be hacked, corrupted, or accidentally deleted. Writing it down by hand is the safest method because offline storage cannot be remotely accessed.

Use Klever’s cross-verification feature

Klever includes a built-in verification system that lets you confirm you’ve written your seed phrase correctly. Always complete this step during wallet setup.

Double-check spelling and order

Every word must be spelled exactly right and in the correct order. Even one mistake means you won’t be able to restore your wallet.

Make multiple backup copies

Create at least 2-3 paper copies and store them in separate, secure locations:

  • Fireproof safe at home

  • Bank safety deposit box

  • Trusted family member’s secure location

  • Waterproof, fireproof document bag

This protects you from disasters like fires, floods, theft, or loss.

Never share it with anyone

No legitimate company- including Klever-will ever ask for your seed phrase. Anyone who has your seed phrase can steal all your crypto immediately.

Consider metal backup solutions

For maximum durability, consider engraving your seed phrase on metal plates designed for crypto backup. These survive fire, floods, and corrosion.

Keep it private

When writing or viewing your seed phrase:

  • Make sure no one is nearby watching

  • Turn off security cameras temporarily

  • Disable screen recording software

  • Don’t say the words out loud

Can I change my seed phrase?

No, you cannot change the seed phrase for an existing wallet. Your seed phrase is mathematically tied to your wallet addresses.

If you want a new seed phrase, you must:

  1. Create a brand new Klever wallet (this generates a new seed phrase)

  2. Write down and verify the new seed phrase

  3. Transfer your crypto from your old wallet to the new wallet

  4. Keep both seed phrases until the transfer is complete

Before creating a new wallet, make sure you have stored your existing seed phrase securely so you can always access your old wallet if needed.

For security reasons, Klever randomly generates your seed phrase. You cannot choose your own words.

How do I cross-verify my seed phrase with the BIP39 wordlist?

Cross-verification is the most critical step in securing your wallet. Klever includes verification systems to ensure you’ve written your seed phrase correctly, and you can also independently verify your words against the official BIP39 wordlist.

Method 1: Klever’s built-in verification

After writing down your 24 words, Klever requires you to verify them before you can complete the wallet setup:

  1. Tap Continue after writing down your seed phrase

  2. Klever will ask you to re-enter your 24-word seed phrase

  3. Type in all 24 words in the correct order

  4. The app will verify that your input matches the generated seed phrase

  5. If successful, tap Continue to complete the setup

This verification step ensures you’ve written down the correct words in the correct order before your wallet becomes active.

Method 2: Cross-check with the official BIP39 wordlist

For additional security, you can verify that each word you’ve written is a valid BIP39 word:

Official BIP39 English Wordlist: https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0039/english.txt

How to use the wordlist:

  1. Open the link above on a secure device

  2. Check each word from your written seed phrase against the list

  3. Every word MUST appear exactly on this list

  4. The list contains exactly 2,048 words

  5. Words are listed in alphabetical order for easy reference

Why this matters:

  • If any word you’ve written is NOT on the BIP39 list, you’ve made an error

  • Common mistakes include: misspellings, adding letters, using similar-sounding words

  • Only words from this official list are valid for BIP39 wallets

Method 3: Word similarity check

If you’re unsure about a word you’ve written:

  1. Search for the word in the BIP39 wordlist (link above)

  2. If it’s not there, look for similar words on the list

  3. For example:

    • “build” is on the list :white_check_mark:

    • “building” is NOT on the list :cross_mark:

    • “women” is NOT on the list :cross_mark:

    • “woman” is on the list :white_check_mark:

  4. Only the first 4 letters of each BIP39 word are unique

  5. If you have the first 4 letters correct, you can identify the full word from the list

What happens if verification fails?

If Klever alerts you that your words don’t match:

  • :cross_mark: Do not proceed - your backup is incorrect

  • :counterclockwise_arrows_button: Return to the seed phrase display screen

  • :white_check_mark: Carefully write down the words again

  • :white_check_mark: Verify each word against the BIP39 wordlist

  • :white_check_mark: Re-enter the phrase until verification succeeds

Never skip verification! This is your only opportunity to catch errors before you need to restore your wallet in an emergency.

After successful verification

Once you’ve verified your seed phrase:

:white_check_mark: Mark the paper as “Verified on [date]”
:white_check_mark: Store it in your secure location immediately
:white_check_mark: Create additional backup copies
:white_check_mark: Never share these words with anyone

:white_check_mark: Consider storing copies in multiple secure locations (fireproof safe, bank deposit box)

How do I restore my wallet with my seed phrase?

If you need to restore your Klever wallet on a new device or after reinstalling the app please refer this article: How to restore the accounts In Klever wallet

Note: Blockchain balances may take a few moments to sync and display depending on network conditions.

Troubleshooting restoration issues

If restoration fails:

If balances don’t appear:

  • Wait a few minutes for blockchain synchronization

  • Check your internet connection

  • Try refreshing the wallet by pulling down on the portfolio screen

  • For specific assets, you may need to manually add them to your wallet

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my 24-word Klever seed phrase in other wallets?

Yes, as long as the other wallet supports BIP39 24-word seed phrases and uses the same derivation paths. However, not all wallets use identical derivation paths, so some assets might not appear. Always test with a small amount first.

Compatible wallets include: MetaMask, Trust Wallet, and other BIP39-compliant wallets.

What if I wrote down my seed phrase wrong?

If you wrote it down incorrectly and you’ve lost access to your device, recovery becomes extremely difficult or impossible. This is why Klever’s verification system and cross-checking with the BIP39 wordlist is so important—it catches errors before it’s too late.

You can verify every word against the official BIP39 wordlist: https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0039/english.txt

Can Klever support help me if I lose my seed phrase?

No. Klever cannot recover, reset, or access your seed phrase. This is by design to protect your security and maintain true self-custody. If you lose your seed phrase and your device, your funds cannot be recovered by anyone-not even Klever.

Should I take a photo of my seed phrase?

No, absolutely never. Photos can be:

  • Automatically backed up to cloud services (iCloud, Google Photos)

  • Hacked or leaked in data breaches

  • Accidentally shared or exposed

  • Recovered from old or stolen devices

  • Accessed by phone repair technicians

  • Compromised through screen mirroring

Always use physical, offline backups written on paper or engraved on metal only.

What if someone finds my seed phrase backup?

Anyone with your seed phrase can access your funds immediately and irreversibly. If you believe your seed phrase has been compromised:

  1. Act immediately - time is critical

  2. Create a new Klever wallet on a secure device

  3. Transfer all funds to the new wallet as quickly as possible

  4. Abandon the old wallet completely

  5. Destroy the compromised seed phrase

  6. Secure your new seed phrase using best practices

What is the BIP39 wordlist and why is it important?

The BIP39 wordlist is an official list of exactly 2,048 English words used to generate seed phrases. Every valid seed phrase word MUST come from this list.

Official BIP39 wordlist: https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0039/english.txt

Why it matters:

  • Ensures compatibility across all BIP39 wallets

  • Allows you to verify your backup is correct

  • Each word is unique in its first 4 letters

  • Prevents ambiguity and errors

If a word you’ve written is not on this list, you’ve made an error and need to correct it.

Can I split my 24-word seed phrase into multiple locations?

Some advanced users split their seed phrase (e.g., words 1-12 in one location, 13-24 in another). While this adds security against theft, it also increases the risk of losing part of your phrase.

We do not recommend this for most users. Only consider this if you:

  • Fully understand the risks

  • Have a reliable system for tracking both parts

  • Have backup copies of each part in separate locations

How long does a seed phrase last?

Your seed phrase is permanent and doesn’t expire. As long as the BIP39 standard exists (which is fundamental to cryptocurrency), your seed phrase will work to restore your wallet. The BIP39 standard has been in use since 2013 and is industry-standard.

What happens to my old 12-word seed phrase from Klever?

If you created a Klever wallet before the transition to 24-word seed phrases, your 12-word seed phrase is still valid and can be used to restore your wallet. However, Klever strongly recommends migrating to a 24-word seed phrase for enhanced security.

To migrate: How to migrate from 12-words Seed to 24-words Seed

How is KleverSafe different?

KleverSafe is Klever’s hardware wallet that stores your 24-word seed phrase offline on a physical device. It uses a true Random Number Generator (RNG) based on physical phenomena for enhanced entropy and security. KleverSafe provides:

  • Offline storage of private keys

  • Protection from malware and hacking

  • Physical transaction confirmation

  • Enhanced randomness in seed generation

Why are there only 2,048 possible words?

The BIP39 standard uses exactly 2,048 words because each word represents 11 bits of data (2^11 = 2,048). This mathematical relationship allows the seed phrase to efficiently encode the random entropy needed to generate your wallet.

With 24 words, you get 24 × 11 = 264 bits of data, which includes 256 bits of entropy plus 8 bits of checksum for error detection.

Important security reminders
